How We Help with Ear Infections

Gentle, precise upper cervical care in SoHo, Astoria and Massapequa.

Worried about ear infections that keep coming back?

Sleepless nights, a cranky child tugging at an ear, another round of appointments. Ear infections are common, especially in children, and repeated ones are hard on the whole family. Your pediatrician or medical doctor manages the infection itself. Alongside that care, our doctors look at neck tension, posture and comfort, with a gentle touch that suits people of all ages, including little ones.

What is an ear infection?

An ear infection usually means fluid has built up behind the eardrum and become infected, often after a cold or other respiratory illness. It causes ear pain, and in children it can also bring fever, fussiness and poor sleep. Some clear up on their own, but others need medical care such as antibiotics, so a pediatrician or doctor should always be involved.

Fluid can also linger after an infection has passed, which may muffle hearing for a while.

Common signs include:

  • Ear pain, or tugging and rubbing at the ear
  • Fever, especially in young children
  • Fussiness, crying or trouble sleeping
  • A feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear
  • Muffled hearing, or not reacting to quiet sounds
  • Fluid draining from the ear
  • Less interest in eating or feeding
  • Colds, sinus problems and other respiratory infections
  • Allergies that swell the lining of the nose and throat
  • Small, more level eustachian tubes in young children that drain less easily
  • Cigarette smoke or other irritants at home
  • Group childcare, where germs pass easily from child to child
  • Enlarged adenoids that can block the tube

Why do ear infections happen?

The eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat, has to open and drain well, and several things can get in the way.

Our care does not act on an infection or on fluid in the ear. What upper cervical chiropractors look at is the neck, including the atlas (C1) and axis (C2), the muscles around them and how the head is carried. Ear infections can need medical care such as antibiotics, so please keep working with your pediatrician or medical doctor, and seek care promptly for a fever, severe pain, fluid draining from the ear, or a baby who seems unwell.

How upper cervical care can help

Our care is meant to work alongside medical care, never instead of it. Your pediatrician or doctor diagnoses an ear infection and decides whether it needs antibiotics or other medical care, and we encourage you to keep every appointment. What we add is a close look at the upper neck, the way the head is carried and the muscles around the neck, to see whether any of it may be adding to the strain.

When we find a misalignment, we use a very light, precise adjustment that is gentle enough for babies, children and adults. Our goal is to ease neck tension and support comfort, not to act on the infection, which stays in your pediatrician’s hands. We will tell you honestly what we see and whether we think care is a good fit for your child or for you.

  • Medical care comes first

If your child has a fever, strong ear pain or fluid draining from the ear, call your pediatrician. We never ask you to wait or to skip medical care.

  • Gentle enough for little ones

For babies and children, adjustments are very light, with no twisting, cracking or popping. We care for patients of all ages, and the touch always fits the person.

  • Examining the upper neck

The doctor looks at how the head and upper neck are positioned and moving, and assesses the neck muscles, to see whether neck tension or posture may be adding to discomfort.

  • Support between infections

For children who get ear infections again and again, we look at neck tension, posture and comfort between episodes, while your pediatrician or an ear, nose and throat doctor looks after the infections themselves.
