Struggling with ringing ears, dizziness or changes in your hearing?
Do you have episodes of spinning, a feeling of fullness in your ear, or hearing that comes and goes? These can be symptoms of Ménière’s disease, a chronic inner-ear condition that can be disruptive and unpredictable. At Apollo Upper Cervical Chiropractic we offer a natural, drug-free approach that looks at how the upper neck and the nervous system may play a part.
What is Ménière’s disease?
Ménière’s disease is a disorder of the inner ear that affects balance and hearing. It usually involves one ear and comes in unpredictable episodes that last from minutes to hours.
Common symptoms include:
- Vertigo, or a spinning sensation
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Hearing loss, often changing from day to day
- A feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear
- Nausea and poor balance during an episode
- Viral infections of the inner ear
- Head or neck trauma
- Misalignment of the cervical spine affecting nerve function and fluid regulation
- Impaired cerebrospinal fluid drainage, or reduced blood flow to the ear and brain
- Allergies or autoimmune conditions
What causes Ménière’s disease?
The exact cause is not fully understood. It is thought to involve a buildup of fluid (endolymph) in the inner ear, which affects the balance and hearing signals sent to the brain. Possible contributing factors include:
A misalignment of the upper cervical spine, specifically the atlas (C1), may interfere with the brainstem and with the structures that regulate ear pressure and fluid balance, and may add to Ménière’s symptoms.
How upper cervical chiropractic can help
We focus on the delicate alignment of the upper neck and its role in neurological function and in the movement of fluid in the brain and inner ear.
Dr. Kosta Tsakalos uses a precise, gentle method to find and correct upper cervical misalignments. The goal is better communication between the brain and the body, which may support healthier regulation of inner-ear fluid pressure. Many patients tell us they notice better balance, less ear pressure and fewer dizzy spells.
