How We Help with Postural Issues

Gentle, precise upper cervical care in SoHo, Astoria and Massapequa.

Tired of being told to sit up straight?

You know you slouch. You have tried reminders, ergonomic chairs and stretches, and your posture still drifts back by the afternoon. Posture is not only a habit. It also reflects how the frame beneath your muscles is balanced. That is why our first step is to measure how your head, shoulders and hips actually sit, and gentle adjustments of the upper neck can follow.

What are postural issues?

Posture is how your body holds itself against gravity while sitting, standing and moving. Common patterns include a head that drifts forward of the shoulders, rounded shoulders, a rounded upper back, a tilted head, or one shoulder or hip that sits higher than the other.

Posture problems are rarely painful at first. Over time, though, the muscles that hold your head up can tire and tighten, which is why posture complaints so often show up together with neck, shoulder and headache complaints.

Common signs include:

  • A head that sits forward of your shoulders
  • Rounded or uneven shoulders
  • Tension in the neck, shoulders and upper back
  • Headaches after long stretches at a screen
  • Aching or tiredness after sitting for a few hours
  • A head tilt, or one hip that sits higher
  • A feeling that standing tall takes constant effort
  • Hours at a desk, laptop or phone with the head tipped forward
  • Carrying a bag or child on the same side every day
  • Past whiplash, falls or sports injuries
  • Weak or tight muscles that pull the body off balance
  • A sleeping position that strains the neck
  • A pelvis or spine that is not level

What causes postural issues?

Posture is shaped by what we do every day and by what has happened to us, and these are common contributors:

In upper cervical care, the thinking is that when the head sits off center on the atlas (C1), the muscles of the neck and back hold the body in a compensating shape. That is why we look at the top of the neck whenever posture is part of the picture.

How upper cervical care can help

Reminding yourself to stand tall is hard to keep up when the frame underneath is off balance. So we start by measuring. A posture evaluation with advanced software shows how your head, shoulders and hips sit in relation to one another, and 3D imaging of your cervical spine shows how the top of your neck is positioned beneath your skull. Together they let us see the pattern behind the slouch.

Care is gentle and precise, with no twisting, cracking or popping. Our doctors choose among techniques such as Blair Upper Cervical and QSM3 Upper Cervical to suit what your measurements show. Our goal is to support a more balanced head position, so that the muscles that have been working overtime have less to do and sitting or standing well may start to take less effort.

  • Seeing your posture clearly

Software measures head tilt, forward head position and shoulder and hip height, giving you and your doctor a clear starting point to compare against later.

  • Which muscles are overworking

Muscles that have held a forward head for years often tighten or tire. Assessing them helps us understand which areas are overworking and which may need support.

  • Starting at the atlas

Because the atlas supports the skull, we look at its position first. A head that sits off center may pull the shoulders and upper back out of line with it.

  • Progress you can see

We repeat the posture evaluation as care goes on, so progress is something you can see in your own measurements, not only something you feel.
