Is your baby crying and you cannot tell why?
Hours of crying that nothing seems to calm can leave any parent tired, worried and second-guessing everything. You are not alone, and it is not your fault. Alongside your pediatrician’s guidance, you may want something gentle to try for your baby. Infant visits at Apollo use only very light fingertip pressure, and a parent stays beside the baby throughout.
What is colic?
Colic is the word for crying in an otherwise healthy baby that is intense, lasts for hours and often comes at the same time of day, usually in the evening. It tends to begin in the first weeks of life and fades as the baby grows.
Colic is a description rather than a diagnosis, so your pediatrician should first rule out other reasons a baby might cry, such as illness or feeding difficulties.
Parents often notice:
- Long crying spells that are hard to soothe
- Crying that arrives at about the same time each day
- A red face, clenched fists or a stiff, arched back
- Legs pulled up toward the belly
- Gas, a tight belly or frequent spitting up
- Short, unsettled sleep
- A digestive system that is still learning to cope with feeding
- Swallowed air during feeding or crying, which can lead to gas
- A baby who is easily overwhelmed by light, sound or activity
- Feeding sensitivities, which your pediatrician can help you sort out
What can lie behind colic?
No one knows exactly why some babies have colic, but a few things may play a part.
Colic does not mean you are doing anything wrong. Once your pediatrician has checked your baby, we can look at your baby’s comfort and posture, and talk with you about whether gentle care might suit them.
How gentle care can support your baby
Adjustments for babies are very different from those for adults. The doctor uses only very light fingertip pressure, with no twisting, cracking or popping, and a parent stays with the baby throughout. Our goal is simply to support your baby’s comfort and posture, and to give you a calm place to ask about what you are seeing at home.
Chiropractic care is meant to be used alongside your pediatrician’s care, never in place of it. Please keep your baby’s regular checkups, bring any worries about crying, feeding or growth to your pediatrician first, and do not stop or change a medication or feeding plan without their advice. The doctor decides what each baby’s exam needs.
A very light touch
Adjustments for infants use very light fingertip pressure, and a parent is beside the baby the whole time. You are welcome to ask any question before anything begins.
Looking at the whole picture
We ask about the birth, feeding, sleep and the times of day crying is worst, then gently look at your baby’s posture, neck and spine.
Keeping your pediatrician informed
If you add chiropractic care, let your pediatrician know, and share what they have told you about your baby so that everyone is working from the same picture.
Call the pediatrician first
A baby with a fever, poor feeding, unusual sleepiness or a cry that will not settle needs the pediatrician first. Trust your instincts, and call or go to emergency care.
