Living with the ups and downs of multiple sclerosis?
Multiple sclerosis can bring fatigue, stiffness, balance trouble and days that are hard to plan around. Alongside the care you already receive from your neurologist, you may be looking for something gentle that supports how your body feels from day to day. What we hope to add is modest: careful, low-force adjustments that support your comfort and posture, offered together with your medical care and never in place of it.
What is multiple sclerosis?
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a long-term condition of the central nervous system, which is the brain and spinal cord. In MS, the immune system mistakenly attacks myelin, the protective coating around nerve fibers, and that can disrupt the messages traveling between the brain and the body. It is diagnosed and managed by a neurologist.
Because it affects each person differently, some people have times of stronger symptoms followed by quieter stretches, while others notice a steadier pattern.
Symptoms vary from person to person, and may include:
- Fatigue that feels bigger than the day
- Numbness or tingling
- Muscle stiffness or spasms
- Difficulty with balance or walking
- Blurred or double vision
- Trouble with focus or memory
- Symptoms that flare in the heat
- An immune system that mistakenly acts on the nervous system
- Genes and family history, which may play a part
- Environmental factors that are still being explored
- Stress, poor sleep and illness, which can make symptoms feel stronger
- Overheating, which can bring symptoms on for a time
- Neck and back strain from standing, walking or sitting differently to cope
What is known about MS, and what makes days harder?
The exact cause of MS is not fully understood, but some things are linked with it, and others can make a hard day harder.
Chiropractic care does not change the course of MS, and we never suggest that it does. What we can do is look at how neck alignment, posture and muscle tension may be adding to your discomfort, and support your comfort from there.
How gentle upper cervical care can support you
The top two vertebrae of the neck sit where the head meets the spine, just below the brainstem. When they are out of alignment, they may add tension to the neck and the muscles around it. After a careful exam, we use low-force adjustments with no twisting, cracking or popping. Our goal is to support comfort and posture, and to ease muscle tension that can make daily movement feel harder.
Care for MS belongs alongside the care of your medical team, never instead of it. Please keep seeing your neurologist, and do not stop or change a medication or therapy without the doctor who prescribed it. We adapt the pace and positioning of each visit to your energy and your balance, so that you are never rushed.
Low-force, careful adjustments
Adjustments are light and precise, and we pay close attention to how your body responds from one visit to the next.
Posture and muscle tension
Stiffness or balance changes can lead to habits that strain the neck and back. We look at posture and tension to support your everyday comfort.
Visits at your pace
Fatigue and sensitivity to heat are real. We keep visits unhurried, help with positioning, and welcome a break whenever you need one.
When to call your neurologist
New or worsening symptoms, such as sudden weakness, loss of vision or trouble speaking, need your neurologist or emergency care right away, before anything else.
