What We Offer

How We Help with Epilepsy and Seizures

Gentle, precise upper cervical care in SoHo, Astoria and Massapequa.

Looking for gentle support alongside your epilepsy care?

Living with epilepsy can mean planning around the unexpected, and many people carry some worry about it every day. Alongside the care you receive from your neurologist, you may want something calm and gentle that supports your comfort, sleep and everyday wellbeing. Visits at Apollo are calm and unhurried, with careful, low-force adjustments that sit alongside your medical care, never in place of it.

What are epilepsy and seizures?

A seizure is a short burst of unusual electrical activity in the brain. It can briefly change movement, awareness, sensation or behavior. Epilepsy is the diagnosis given when a person has a tendency to have repeated seizures, and it is diagnosed and managed by a neurologist.

There are many types of seizure, from a few seconds of staring to a full-body convulsion, and many people with epilepsy live full, active lives.

What people with epilepsy often describe includes:

  • A sudden pause or blank stare
  • Jerking or stiffening of the arms or legs
  • An unusual feeling, taste or smell beforehand
  • Confusion or deep tiredness afterward
  • Poor or broken sleep
  • Worry about when the next seizure may come
  • Genes and differences in how the brain developed
  • A past head injury, stroke or infection of the brain
  • In many people, no clear cause is ever found
  • Sleep loss, illness and heavy stress, which some people notice can bring on a seizure
  • Skipped or changed medication, which is why your neurologist’s plan always comes first
  • Tight neck and shoulder muscles, which are common and can add to headaches and poor rest

What is known about epilepsy, and what makes it harder?

The reason is often unclear, but several things are linked with epilepsy, and others can make daily life with it harder.

Chiropractic care is not a way to control seizures, and we never suggest that it is. Our role is to look at how the neck, posture and muscle tension may be affecting your comfort and your sleep.

How upper cervical care can sit alongside your epilepsy care

Upper cervical care focuses on the top two vertebrae of the neck, which sit just below the brainstem where the head meets the spine. After a careful exam, the doctor uses gentle, low-force adjustments with no twisting, cracking or popping. Our goal is to support your comfort, posture and rest, and to ease tension in the neck and shoulders, one visit at a time.

This care sits alongside your medical care and never replaces it. Please keep working with your neurologist, and do not stop or change a seizure medication or any therapy without the doctor who prescribed it. Tell us about your seizure history, your medicines and any warning signs you notice, so that each visit is planned with your safety in mind.

  • Planned around your safety

We ask about your seizure type, your triggers and any warning signs, and we plan each visit at a calm and unhurried pace.

  • Comfort, posture and sleep

Tight neck muscles and poor posture can add to headaches and restless nights. We look at both, with the aim of supporting your comfort and your rest.

  • A light touch

Adjustments use little force, and nothing is twisted. We stay attentive to how you feel during each visit and afterward.

  • Know when to call 911

A seizure lasting more than five minutes, seizures one after another, or a first seizure need 911 right away. Chiropractic care is never a substitute for emergency or neurological care.
