Lying awake while the rest of the world sleeps?
Watching the clock, turning over, waking at 3 a.m. and dreading the morning: poor sleep wears you down in every way. Good sleep habits matter, but they are not always enough. One place worth checking is your neck, because gentle upper cervical adjustments aim to ease the kind of tension that may be keeping your body too alert to rest.
What is insomnia?
Insomnia means regularly having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or waking too early, even when you have time to sleep. It can last a few nights or go on for months, and it often leaves you tired, irritable and unfocused the next day. Occasional bad nights are normal. When poor sleep becomes a pattern that affects your days, it is worth looking into.
Common signs include:
- Trouble falling asleep
- Waking often during the night
- Waking too early and not being able to go back to sleep
- Feeling unrested even after a full night in bed
- Daytime sleepiness, irritability or low mood
- Trouble with focus and memory
- Stress, worry or a mind that will not switch off
- An irregular schedule, shift work or late-night screens
- Caffeine, alcohol or late meals
- Pain or discomfort that makes it hard to settle
- Sleep apnea, restless legs or other medical conditions
- Hormonal changes or some medications
What causes insomnia?
Sleep trouble usually has more than one cause, and the causes can feed each other, such as:
The body falls asleep when the nervous system shifts from “fight or flight” toward “rest and digest.” Upper cervical chiropractors look at the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) because neck tension and strain near the brainstem may make that shift harder.
How upper cervical care can help
Your brainstem helps guide sleep and waking, and it sits just above the atlas and axis, where the spinal cord passes through. If a small misalignment of the atlas or axis is adding strain nearby, your body may stay on high alert even when you are exhausted. A gentle adjustment aims to ease that strain so your body can settle more naturally at night.
We are not trying to force sleep. The aim is to support your body’s natural sleep rhythm, so that settling down and staying asleep come more easily over time, though results vary. Keep up the sleep habits your doctor recommends, and see a medical doctor if you snore loudly, stop breathing briefly in your sleep, or feel exhausted all day despite a full night in bed.
Easing tension at night
Neck tension can make it hard to find a comfortable position. Gentle adjustments aim to ease tight, guarded muscles in the neck and shoulders so lying still feels easier.
When you cannot wind down
Winding down is hard when your body feels on guard. We look at the upper neck as one possible contributor to that keyed-up feeling, along with your daily stress and habits.
Posture and bedtime
We use posture software to see how your head and neck are carried, since a neck held out of line all day can leave you sore and tight by bedtime.
Tracking how you rest
We ask how you are sleeping at each progress check, so your plan follows what is changing: how fast you fall asleep, how often you wake, and how you feel in the morning.
